All Mariah magazine
All Mariah magazine no. 7
In September 2007 it was exactly 10 years ago that Mariah released her Butterfly album. In this issue of the All Mariah magazine you will find 18 pages about this album. Can Özdilek wrote an introduction, Badyr Salcedo wrote an article about the lyrics, Anita Braaksma wrote about the different releases, and many fans wrote what they think of the album. We also have a look at all the video's off Butterfly. But there is more. There are articles about Mariah's performance at Disneyland Paris (written by Rashmi Shastri), Mariah's first fragrance, "M by Mariah Carey", the unreleased track "I feel it" (written by Benjamin Szumskyj), and a review of the Ultra Platinum Edition of The Emancipation Of Mimi (also written by Benjamin Szumskyj). Finally, Alexis Brown wrote an article about a code of ethics for Mariah fans. All Mariah magazine no. 7 was released in September 2007.

Do you remember the first time you heard Mariah? Or maybe the first time you saw her? In All Mariah magazine number 6 you will find many stories of fans about the first time they heard or saw Mariah and how that moment changed their lives. In 1999, Mariah first "discovered" the Internet and she found out she could reach her fans directly, without interference of her record company. Since then she left many voice messages, and some of these voice messages have become very famous. In this magazine, you will find many of her first voice messages. Furthermore, Anita Braaksma wrote a follow-up article about Mariah's unreleased and rare songs and Alexis Brown wrote another article about Mariah’s health. But there's more. Badyr Salcedo wrote an article about the main Mariah websites and Can Özdilek has some advice for Mariah. All Mariah magazine no. 6 was released in June 2007.

All Mariah magazine no. 5
The main news of the last couple of months is that Mariah is the new face of Italian fashion house Pinko. At the end of this magazine you can read more about this. But the magazine starts with an article about Mariah's visit to South-Africa were she was a guest of Oprah at the opening of the Oprah Winfrey Leadership Academy for Girls. Jonathan Leu wrote about the Grammy Awards and how they are always unfair to Mariah. And - no surprise - this year Mariah didn't win any of the two awards she was nominated for. But still, Mariah is the new legend, according to an article by Badyr Salcedo. Alexis Brown started a serie of articles on Mariah's health. The first article handles her insomnia. Anita Braaksma wrote about Mariah's unreleased and rare songs, and Can Özdilek wrote about the many producers Mariah has worked with. All in all, this magazine is again packed with articles and high quality photographs which we all hope you will like. All Mariah magazine no. 5 was released in March 2007.

All Mariah magazine no. 4
In December 2006, the All Mariah magazine no 4 was released. This means that the magazine is already one year old. I want to thank everyone who helped to make the All Mariah magazine a success. And I'm proud to welcome a new editor to our team, Alexis Brown. She wrote a review of the sold-out September 30 concert at the MGM Grand Garden Arena. But there are also articles from our regular editors. Anita Braaksma wrote a follow-up article on Mariah's remixes, Rashmi Shastri had an exclusive interview with Trey Lorenz, and Badyr Salcedo wrote a follow-up article on the Emancipation videos. Furthermore, Benjamin Szumskyj compiled a list of solo performances and collaborations Mariah has sung, that have not appeared on one of her own albums or in another form.

Time flies. This is already the second issue of the All Mariah magazine. It seems just yesterday when the first All Mariah magazine was released. For this issue, our regular editor Badyr Salcedo wrote an article on the Emancipation videos. And I am proud to welcome three new editors to our team. Benjamin Szumskyji wrote an article on Christianity, Can Özdilek compares Mariah to Madonna, and Rashmi Shastri wrote an article on Mariah's movies. In the center of this magazine, you will find a Say Somethin' special, with some great pictures from the videoclip. Unfortunately, the single wasn't the success we all hoped it would be. All Mariah magazine no. 2 was released in June 2006

All Mariah magazine no. 1
This first issue is filled with award shows, like the Vibe Awards, the American Music Awards, the Billboard Awards, the Radio Music Awards and, of course, the Grammy Awards. This is no surprise, as Mariah won big at most awards shows, thanks to her "comeback" album The Emancipation Of Mimi and the single of the year, We Belong Together. But in this issue you will also find an article written by Badyr Salcedo, in which he recaps the highlights of 2005. And there are pictures of Mariah taking a holiday in France, Mariah mania in London, Mariah performing at New Year's Rockin' Eve, and Mariah at the Golden Globe Awards. All Mariah magazine no. 1 was released in March 2006.

ELLEN DEGENERES: MARIAH CAREY SMELLS LIKE S'MORES

ELLEN DEGENERES: MARIAH CAREY SMELLS LIKE S'MORES
The "scentsational" Mariah Carey stopped by Ellen Wednesday to talk turkey - and perfume. "You smell a little like s'mores," Ellen DeGeneres said, welcoming the divine diva to her show Wednesday.
"I'm not really a fragrance girl. I don't really like scents," Carey contended as she spritzed her host from head to toe with her new perfume, M by Mariah Carey. "But, the company was like, 'We want this to be a representation of you.' "
The songstress worked closely with perfumers to arrive at both her signature scent as well as the pretty purple bottle which is topped by - you guessed it - a butterfly. "The marshmallow element you smelled before is the top note and was a subliminal thing - just to give you little campfire memories," she explained of her first-ever fragrance.
"My signature scent of course, is gin and Marlboros," countered a deadpan DeGeneres. "When you come home with it on, they're like, 'You've been out. No, I have Ellen's perfume on!' "
Though she'll smell yummy, Carey's hectic schedule will keep her from having a true Thanksgiving this year. "I'm working," she told DeGeneres. "Though I really want to learn how to cook a turkey. It can't be that big of a deal, it just seems like one, to me."

MARIAH'S MERRY CHRISTMAS
MARIAH'S MERRY CHRISTMAS
MARIAH'S MERRY CHRISTMAS
Christmas is a magical time for everyone, but to Mariah fans, Christmas is the ultimate "Mariah Holiday". It's in this time of the year when Mariah's "All I Want For Christmas Is You" storms back to the top of radio stations' playlists and stays in heavy rotation due to popular demand.
It's hard to believe, but the now-classic song that was described by The New Yorker as "one of the few worthy modern additions to the holiday canon", has been covered by everyone from Shania Twain to The Cheetah Girls, was featured in a successful holiday movie ("Love Actually") and can be heard in various TV commercials around the world, is a 13-year old original Mariah creation.
With the introduction of digital media, "All I Want For Christmas Is You" continues to prove its "classic" status: In addition to selling over 600,000 digital downloads and topping Billboard's "Hot Digital Songs" chart, it is the first ever seasonal ringtone to be certified by the RIAA (Gold certification of 500,000 sales). This Christmas, the song will be released as Mariah's first ringle.
"All I Want For Christmas Is You" was the first single from Mariah's 1994 release "Merry Christmas". The album is now the best selling Christmas album of all time, having sold 5 million copies in the US alone and close to 12 million records worldwide.
In addition to "All I Want...", Mariah wrote two more original songs for the album: "Miss You Most (At Christmas Time)" and "Jesus Born On This Day". Mariah's three original songs joined memorable covers of "O Holy Night" and "Joy To The World" as the five singles released to radio from "Merry Christmas".
Since their release in 1994, many of the songs from "Merry Christmas" yielded new versions: "Joy To The World" was remixed by David Morales and a music video to its "Celebration Mix" was released. "All I Want For Christmas Is You" was remixed by Jermaine Dupri in 2000 and was included in Mariah's "Greatest Hits" album. Also in 2000, "O Holy Night" saw a fresh rendition accompanied with a brand new music video.
In 2005, an anniversary edition of "Merry Christmas" was released on Dual Disc (CD and DVD) featuring the Anniversary Mix of "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town". An innovative claymation video of the song as well as all seven of Mariah's Christmas music videos were made available for the first time on the DVD. This release also included the beautiful "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen", sung in a-capella by Mariah, which was previously available only on international editions of the album.
Fans will agree that the best renditions of Mariah's Christmas songs are found in her many live performances of them over the years: "Joy To The World" at St. John the Divine and the 2000 version of "O Holy Night" being prime examples. Mariah's Japanese fans will also attest to that as Mariah has performed "All I Want For Christmas Is You" as an encore in every one of her Japanese tour dates. After all, "All I Want For Christmas Is You" is one of Mariah's biggest hits in Japan, selling over 2 million copies of the single there.

ON SECOND THOUGHT - MERRY CHRISTMAS
ON SECOND THOUGHT - MERRY CHRISTMAS
ON SECOND THOUGHT - MERRY CHRISTMAS
For better or worse, we here at Stylus, in all of our autocratic consumer-crit greed, are slaves to timeliness. A record over six months old is often discarded, deemed too old for publication, a relic in the internet age. That's why each week at Stylus, one writer takes a look at an album with the benefit of time. Whether it has been unjustly ignored, unfairly lauded, or misunderstood in some fundamental way, we aim with On Second Thought to provide a fresh look at albums that need it.
Wondering why Christmas missed us: Wikipedia defines "Christmas Envy" as, "In psychoanalytic thought, the desire of Jews or people of other non-Christian denominations to celebrate and enjoy all the non-religious traditions and customs associated with Christmas. See also Hanukkah Bush, Nativity Menorah, Star of David Made of a Bunch of Crucifixes, Neil Diamond."
Now, even if I might happen to be the person who submitted Christmas Envy's Wikipedia entry, this definition remains true. Christmas Envy is a most powerful force, often afflicting our more Semitic-ly inclined children at an early age: "Mommy? How come they don't celebrate Hanukkah on Home Improvement? How come our house is so freaking dark? How come all the other children in school are so very happy... and we are so very sad?"
I live in the suburbs of Long Island (which is redundant, of course). Right now the air is cool, the grass is frozen, and house after house after house is lit up like the freaking sun, each decorated with successive tiny bursts of reds, greens, blues, purples, yellows, and maybe, if you're lucky, a big fat inflatable illuminated Santa Claus. Jewish grandmothers will typically scoff at such displays as gaudy or tasteless or, more likely, "goyim nachas" (which roughly translates to "shit that makes Christian people happy") but I don't know, it looks pretty awesome to me. Because then we arrive at our house: a bay window with nine mostly unlit orange bulbs. This is the festival of lights? Seems like they're beating us at our own game.
So let's put this out there: Hanukkah isn't much fun. (And if you really want to know, we don't even really play with dreidels. In fact, dreidels don't even exist; it's simply a myth conceived by the Jewish liberal media to make you think we're not just sitting at home doing nothing in the dark.) To its credit, Christmas makes a great effort to include everyone regardless, spreading cheer and good will toward men and the such. But there will always exist, at least among the "Chosen People", this inescapable feeling of exclusion, an exclusion from joy. Christmas Envy manifests itself like so: First you resent it, then you realize you resent it because you're jealous, then you do it a little bit, and then you feel guilty. Congratulations! Now you're "a self-hating Jew no better than Larry King", as your grandfather would say. There are no winners. You can't win. But, I'm red and green with Christmas Envy and there's nothing I can do about it. For this, I mostly blame Mariah Carey.
Which brings us to today's topic: I have a sneaking suspicion Merry Christmas might be the definitive Mariah Carey album. Regardless of your religion, if you've ever worked in a drugstore or a mall during the holiday season, while Christmas music is incessantly pumped through the Muzak, you begin to develop a certain appreciation for the stuff. Now, to be fair, even to the most holiday-spirited Christmas music can be insufferable: monotonous sleighbells, unintelligible choral hymns, overly expressive anonymous vocals, irritating novelty songs. But every now and then an undeniable gem queues up on the PA and, as a stock boy for CVS Pharmacy, you must cherish these moments. These are the songs that make work bearable, tiny beacons of light in the shadows of Muzak. Of course we're talking about John Lennon's "Happy X-Mas (War is Over)", Darlene Love's "All Alone for Christmas" (Home Alone 2, what!), Bing Crosby and David Bowie's "Little Drummer Boy", Nat King Cole's rendition of "A Christmas Song", The Chipmunk's "Christmas Don't Be Late", and, reluctantly, Paul McCartney's "Wonderful Christmas Time". (Maybe once they played Run-DMC's "Christmas in Hollis" but it sure as hell didn't happen on your shift.)
But 200 years from now 16-year-olds will teleport to their jobs at the mall. They will clock in using their retina, re-stock and straighten the aisles through telekinesis, maybe fold some pants, Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas Is You" will come on... And all work will stop.
History has a funny way of disregarding Christmas albums by contemporary artists as mere stocking-stuffers or contractual obligation fillers, often assuming they've been recorded, mixed, packaged, and released for consumption with the same amount of effort it takes to snowblow your driveway. This might be right. I doubt John Denver and the Muppets or Ashanti were busting their ass to drop a classic on the masses, but in the case of Mariah Carey's Merry Christmas the argument simply does not and should not apply. It... transcends!
Released shortly after the multi-platinum success of Music Box, Merry Christmas is Mariah Carey at her absolute creative and commercial peak, her voice still a marvel, her songs and performances still undeniably brilliant. Sadly, Merry Christmas is also in some ways the climax in a career that, beginning with Music Box's follow-up Daydream, would find Carey devolving into a glorified hook singer, almost completely forsaking the straight vocal pop that made her a superstar for the limiting melodic palette of hip-hop and R&B that has never really suited her talents. As we know, she would later fail miserably, lose her fucking mind, flaunt breasts so spread apart they look like Captain Crunch's hovering and disembodied eyebrows, then lose her mind again (then come back to prominence 10 freaking years later; that's really neither here nor there). Point is: this is a far cry from the girl dressed like Mrs. Claus frolicking in the snow.
The closest we'll get to the traditional gospel album Carey will probably never get to do, Merry Christmas finds Carey performing elevated, near-definitive interpretations of songs that have been sung by the majority of the solar system; songs like "Silent Night", "O Holy Night", "Jesus Born on This Day", even "Hark! The Herald Angels Sing"; songs that Carey somehow refreshes and makes her own.
She fares even better on the album's more contemporary tracks, all of which are surprisingly heavily indebted to Spector-pop. On Darlene Love's "Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)", she's backed by her somehow-never-superfluous gospel choir, and employs all 27 or so of her octaves for the song's perfect '60s progression; she sings "The snow's coming down" with the same enthusiasm as children who've been praying for a snow day. For the Carey original "Miss You Most (At Christmas Time)" you get Carey and piano and some strings for a genuinely understated ballad, which, all things considered might feature her most beautiful vocal performance ever.
Which brings us back to "All I Want For Christmas Is You". To say this song is an instant classic somehow doesn't capture its amazingicity; it's a modern standard: joyous, exhilarating, loud, with even a hint of longing (ooh longing!). She sings, "I don't want a lot for Christmas / I won't even wish for snow," such a beautiful phrase delivered with full sincerity over rolling pianos, spine-squashing tympanis, philharmonic strings, and a quasi-wall of sound - and Mariah's gorgeous voice bursts through it all. Fuck, why haven't I been celebrating Christmas?!
Dr. Seuss was mad Jewish, but he wrote in How the Grinch Stole Christmas, "Welcome Christmas while we stand, heart to heart and hand in hand." That's pretty nice. He figured that shit out. There's no guilt. No guilt in being a Jew who envies Christmas, or being a Jew who enjoys Christmas music, or being a badass (as I am) and still liking Mariah Carey, because, all this stuff is freaking awesome.

My Year Of Flops Case File #90 Glitter
In his very last email to me, my late friend and Movie Club With John Ridley colleague Anderson Jones suggested that I write up Glitter for this feature. Mariah Carey held a special place in his heart. I once asked Anderson if he’d ever been recognized in public during his stint on FX’s The New Movie Show With Chris Gore. He said he’d been recognized once at a Mariah Carey concert, which seemed fitting. Carey’s people were his people: they understood and shared his bone-deep commitment to superficiality, to the eternal allure of glitter and tinsel, to big fluffy movies and sticky-sweet pop songs.
mariah carey photo
So today I am going to honor a dead friend’s memory by making glib jokes at one of his favorite artist’s expense. Call me a hero if you must (no, seriously: call he a hero), but I’m just a guy doing my job. And being a hero. Mainly being a hero.
Glitter arrived at a crucial moment in what I call the hoification of Mariah Carey. Hoification occurs when an actress or singer stops being judged on their body of work and begins getting judged by the work they’ve had done to their body. It’s a surprisingly ubiquitous pop-culture phenomenon in which an actress or singer decides that they want to be recognized not just as a singer or songwriter but also as a sweet, sweet piece of T&A.

For Carey, the process began with the music video for “Honey”, a tour de force of cheesecake iconography. After “Honey,” Carey was suddenly a woman with a message. For better or worse, that message was “Hey World: Get a load of my tits! They’re really great!” Her video concepts went from “having fun at the amusement park” (the pre-hoification smash “Fantasy” http://youtube.com/watch?v=e7iyjsLlsyk) to “jiggling about as a scantily clad racetrack ho-bag” (the post-hoification track “Loverboy” http://youtube.com/watch?v=AyU6vusV9NA), which perhaps not coincidentally was also the first single from the Glitter soundtrack).
Carey is far from alone in undergoing the hoification process. Jewel, Janet Jackson, Lindsey Lohan, and Nelly Furtado all similarly made a brave decision to become one-dimensional sex objects. With Jackson and Carey, it’s possible to demarcate the exact moment the hoification process began in earnest and when it officially went too far.
In the early parts of her career, a painfully insecure Janet Jackson dressed as if her outfits were chosen by Taliban. Then the Brigitte Bardot-styled video for “Love Will Never Do Without You” opened the floodgates of sexuality until the notorious breast-flashing at the Super Bowl caused a culture-wide orgy of hand-wringing and tut-tutting that these sinful vixens and their hypnotic cleavage of doom had finally gone too far.
Carey experienced a similar avalanche of censure and criticism when she handed out popsicles and indulged in an impromptu strip-tease during an infamous appearance on Total Request Live, well into what can similarly be dubbed the Crazification process. These public-relations disasters echo the scene in Nashville where Gwen Welles’ painfully untalented looker dispiritedly takes off her clothes in a pathetic attempt to punish/win back a crowd by giving them exactly what she thinks they really want. Incidents like these speak to the fundamental hypocrisy at the heart of our culture’s bifurcated attitude towards sex and exhibitionism: we leer and ogle with impunity, then magically turn into disapproving prudes concerned only with protecting the virtue and innocence of the Children (oh, won’t someone think of the Children!) once a fuzzy, invisible line is crossed.
The enduring appeal of the hoification process is seemingly easy to understand. Sex sells, doesn’t it? Yet case studies of the aforementioned artists tell a different story. The pre-hoification Lohan was a popular and respected actress who scored solid hits in Mean Girls and Manic Monday. The post-hoification Lohan? Not so much. Jackson, Jewel, and Carey similarly ranked as three of the most successful female artists of our time before they decided to air out the fun bags as often as possible. But their sexed-up image makeovers did little to boost sales. Only Furtado benefited greatly from the hoification process and that had more to do with catchy songs and Timbaland production than her sexy new look and risqué lyrics.

Glitter hit theaters at the worst possible time for Carey’s previously blessed career. Her early good girl image was a faded memory, the hoification process had turned off as many fans as it created, and she was careening rapidly towards a nervous breakdown. The release of the film was postponed following Carey’s hospitalization for that nebulous old standby known as “exhaustion” (celebrities sure are an easily tired lot, aren’t they?), but the damage had already been done. A mega-star who could previously do no wrong commercially suddenly could do no right.
Even her recording career began to suffer: the soundtrack to Glitter was nearly as big a bomb as the film it accompanied, in no small part because it faced much higher expectations. At the time of its release, it was unclear whether Glitter would mark the beginning of the end for Carey or a bump in the road. Carey has subsequently rebounded on the strength of those terrible dog-whistle ballads they pipe into malls like stale air freshener, but Glitter had the potential to be a career-killer.
Carey’s only starring vehicle to date takes a page from the pop star handbook by transforming the bare bones of Carey’s history into a glossy show-business melodrama, equal parts A Star Is Born (that would be the dreadful 1976 Streisand version) and Mahogany.
In a performance that, to borrow an old Dorothy Parker line, runs the gamut of emotions from A to B, Carey stars as a biracial striver who grows up in an orphanage after being abandoned by her white father and drunken, self-destructive African-American mother. After getting discovered by a DJ/producer named “Dice” (Max Beesley), Carey becomes a back-up singer for a talentless looker played by the almost inconceivably hot Padma Lakshmi, the owner of the sexiest scar in show business.
It’s a testament to the film’s sadly realistic take on ‘80s fashion that it manages to make even the sight of Lakshmi in a catsuit look more creepy than erotic while the outfits Carey and her cohorts sport while backing up Lakshmi look they were purchased at Apollonia’s garage sale.

Lakshmi reportedly started dating Salman Rushdie while filming Glitter, a courtship I imagine was frustrated by Rushdie constantly badgering his new girlfriend for gossip about Carey. I can imagine a candlelit dinner where Lakshmi rolls her eyes as Rushdie urgently inquires “What’s she like? I bet she’s nice. Does she have an entourage? Do you think she’s read The Satanic Verses? Cause that would be way cool if she has”.
I also like to imagine that Rushdie ghost-wrote the film’s screenplay. The following lines of dialogue could clearly only have come from a writer of Rushdie’s stature:
“Sylk, I had no idea you could blow like that.”
“Is this how you like, soup girls up to try to get what you want?”
“I know you’re a fly DJ and everything and I should feel honored that you want to work with me.”
“You must be smoking dust, T.”
“I want to take you away from this street urchin sassy, sexy, slutty thing.”
“That’s good. She looks amazing.”
“Yeah, if you like Titsy the Porn Star (and who doesn’t like Titsy the Porn Star? If not for her films, than at least for her humanitarian endeavor)”
“Flames don’t walk. They flicker.”
“Don’t mouth off again, Roach Bag.”
Beesley eventually buys Carey’s contract from Lakshmi’s boyfriend (a slightly overqualified Terrence Howard) and instantly transforms her into a huge star. In its busy first hour, Glitter hops deliriously from one music-melodrama cliché to another, finding time to include my all-time favorite show-business movie trope: Carey and The Diceman are riding in a taxi when they hear Carey’s song on the radio. She’s made it! They like her! They really, really like her! Baby, she’s a star! Dice orders the cabbie to crank up the volume while Carey orders, “Gimme a dime! Gimme a dime!” so she can call up her best home girls and orders them to crank up the radio so they can hear her. Much jumping up and down, irrational exuberance, and girlish, high-pitched shrieking ensues, topped off with some not-at-all ridiculous slow motion (subtle!). Man, I hope they never retire this oldie but goody.
But Beesley isn’t too keen on sharing Carey with the world. As Carey’s star rises his descends. The busy rocket-ride-to-super-stardom arc gives way to somber piano tinkling and Carey’s acting goes from strained smiles and perky head nods to frowny faces and forehead crinkling as she reflects on how sad it is that, like, her mom and dad totally abandoned her and stuff and her boyfriend is kinda going crazy.
Carey’s performance here suggests she had long since forgotten how non-famous people behave. With her default deer-in-the-headlights expression, she perennially seems to be on the lookout for personal assistants or bodyguards or some other functionary who could intervene to keep her from communicating with people who aren’t paid to do her bidding.
In a delicious bit of irony, Carey’s character here deeply resents being forced to vamp her way through a music video whose concept seems to be “Orgy at Plato’s Retreat.” Glitter consequently has it both ways. It gets to show off Carey’s assets in countless skimpy yet strangely unflattering outfits and it gets to insist that Carey is at heart a deep, soulful artist uncomfortable with cynical attempts to exploit her sexuality.
Shameless to the bitter end, Glitter has Howard—who oozes malevolent charm as an oily music-biz hustler—kill Beesley right before Carey can go onstage at a sold-out show at Madison Square Garden and sing a big number about him. As if that weren’t enough to satisfy the ten-year-old girl in everyone, Carey then takes a limo to the country for a joyous reunion with her now clean and sober mom.
mariah carey video
It’s easy and fun to lampoon the film’s lazy reliance on time-tested show-biz movie conventions, but Carey really seems to believe in them, just as she really seems to feel the sentimental horseshit she screeches at deafening volumes in her ballads. There’s something strangely poignant about the scene where Carey explains her fantasy that she’ll someday become successful enough that her mother will feel a surge of pride and deeply regret having abandoned her. I think everyone who grew up without a parent has felt that same maudlin sentiment, that sad little desire to become big and successful and accomplished enough to make the sins of the past fade away into nothingness. In moments like this, it’s possible to see the woman behind the glistening pop facade, to get a sense of who Carey is as person. There’s a fragility in this scene that’s sorely lacking from the rest of her performance, a turn that feels like an extension of her music-video vamping, not an evolutionary leap forward.
When Carey learns of Beesley’s violent death at the hands of an Oscar nominee, her expression suggests less heartbreak and shock than a bewildered, shell-shocked desire to appear shattered. She seems to be thinking “Oh shit, I’m supposed to be sad. What’s sad? I know: a puppy being killed. No! That poor puppy. It never hurt anybody! Poor, poor little puppy.”
”“The Glitter can’t overpower the artist” argues a philosophical music video director early on while engaging in a free-form stream-of-consciousness rant about the enigma that is Mariah Carey. “Okay, we ask ourselves. Is she white? Is she black? We don’t know. She’s exotic. I wanna see more of her breasts.” He asks himself and the audience as much as his crew. Here, the glitter overpowers Carey’s fatally wan presence completely. It’s not even close. Also, I wanna see more of her breasts.

Posh: 'I Ain't No Mariah But I Can Sing'
Victoria Beckham is no Mariah Carey
The Spice Girl hits back at criticism surronding the reunion tour...
Victoria Beckham is no Mariah Carey but she can certainly sing, or so she says.
The Spice Girl – whose vocal ability has come under fire after she was given a catwalk strut instead of her own solo singing spot during the band's reunion tour - has defended her vocal ability.
"I'm no Mariah Carey, but I can sing” claims the 33-year-old.
"It became very obvious from the start that I was never going to be the best singer or the best dancer or the best actress. I was never a 'natural'. You know, I've never been that good at anything, to be completely honest."
Posh - who has three sons, eight-year-old Brooklyn, five-year-old Romeo and two-year-old Cruz with husband David Beckham – claims that the sole reason she agreed to the tour was so her children could see her as a ‘pop star’.
"I wanted my children to see that Mummy was a pop star” she continued “It was the last opportunity for them to stand in a crowd full of people screaming for the Spice Girls."
Victoria also revealed that her family are happier than ever after their move to Los Angeles.
She added to Elle magazine: "Going to school here, the kids are much happier. Their confidence level has gone through the roof. I'm very proud to be British, but here it's a lot more relaxed. It's the happiest as a family that we've ever been. I just love America."

LAUGH AT ME
December 9, 2007 -- MARIAH Carey has teamed up with director Spike Lee to create a video that makes fun of those who make fun of her. The video - called “Lovers and Haters," which will be on Carey's new concert DVD, “The Adventures of Mimi" - features actors saying unkind things Carey has overheard about herself. One young woman says, “I heard that ain't even her real voice. She keeps this great singer in the dungeon. She only gives her bread and water and takes her out when it's time to record."

Mobile downloads to help decide Xmas number one
mariah carey news
Mobile downloads will, for the first year ever, help determine who is number one in the pop parade on Christmas day.
The news that downloads now count as record sales has had a mixed reaction from the nation's older pop pickers who point out that this new music company practice increases the chances of older artists winning chart positions from younger acts.
Never will this more true than at Christmas time when downloads are likely to propel 'classic' songs that haven't even been released as singles into the upper reaches of the top forty.
Irish hell-raisers The Pogues are just one band taking advantage of this sales trend, their Fairytale of New York is just outside this week's top ten, while falsetto-lunged diva Mariah Carey's All I Want for Christmas Is You occupies the number eight spot.
Competing with the download-only contenders will be Eva Cassidy and Katie Melua's cover of the Louis Armstrong standard What A Wonderful World which is released today, as is denim-clad rockers Status Quo's It's Christmas Time.
The novelty market will be represented by Life's A Treat by Shaun the Sheep and Theme From Fraggle Rock, both hoping to knock Leona Lewis's Bleeding Love from the coveted number one position.

Idolator's Tribute-Video Treasury Attempts To Fathom "ER" Fanfic
Once again, Idolator intern Kate Richardson scours the video sites, looking for the best fan-made music videos. In this installment, she tries to see if Mariah Carey or Bright Eyes can properly underscore the creepiness of people who seriously use "cute" nicknames for their favorite hospital-drama couples.
A good tribute video should, above all, make you uncomfortable. Something about the subject matter and the song choice--either separately, or in combination--ought to turn your stomach a bit and make you nervous for humanity. It's like how you don't really believe a topical cream is working until it burns--you can't trust a tribute video until it makes you physically cringe. Today we'll go deep into the heart of darkness that is Luby (or Lubby, depending on which fan site you ask) videos. Oh, you're not familiar with Luby? Well, you know ER? You know that hot Croatian doctor named Luka? And the chick from NewsRadio who plays Abby? And how they're a couple on the show? Luka. Abby. Luby. There's nothing creepier than fanfic, except banal prime time doctor drama fanfic set to Bright Eyes... or Mariah Carey.
Song: "First Day of My Life" by Bright Eyes
Concept: Luka and Abby as two teens who met in the bathroom line at Coachella in 2005 and immediately fell in love.
So this is a pretty dialogue-heavy video, which is either a bold artistic choice or just very distracting. The talking at least drowns out Conor Oberst's unbearable treacle some of the time. There's really not all that much going on here; there are a few nice little artistic flourishes with the still shots, but in general it's just a good old fashioned bizarro concept video. As if the Luby factor--which I'm still trying to wrap my head around--weren't uncomfortable enough, the added quavering tenderness of Bright Eyes makes the whole thing practically unbearable. A fictional romance about two doctors in their mid-30s on a prime-time drama shouldn't be anywhere near a Bright Eyes song. If there's one thing for which YouTube will live in infamy, it'll be these cultural trainwrecks.
Best music-to-image sync-up moment: I have to admit, I like the strange disappearing stained glass window effect at 1:17. It works well with the sound and tone of the song.
Silliest music-to-image sync-up moment: This is more to do with ER than the video itself, but this bit of dialogue is just beyond the pale:
Abby: You watch me when we make love.
Luka: (Dramatic pause, sigh) You're beautiful.
Song: "Emotions" by Mariah Carey
Concept: Luka and Abby as characters in a particularly bad early-'90s chick flick.
The main problem here is aesthetic incongruity. Mariah Carey's bouncy ode to feelings is bursting with sunshine and different shades of pink, whereas ER is a decidedly gray and dull green affair. It is set in an emergency room, after all. And, strangely, in a lot of the clips Luka and Abby seem pretty pissed off. The whole thing is a bit of a mess, from the dissolve transition overkill to the poorly placed sex scenes. But perhaps the most heinous offense is that it's just plain boring. Once the novelty of watching ER fanfic set to Mariah Carey has worn off, you're left only with the mind-numbing reality of Windows Media Maker and its many limitations. This one delivers that initial feeling of uneasy dread essential for all truly worthy tribute videos, but lacks the character and execution to be a true classic.
Best music-to-image sync-up moment: Nothing in particular stands out.
Silliest music-to-image sync-up moment : The placement of the sex scenes really creeps me out. It's a very weird, subtle thing, but I hate that they're synced up with Mariah Carey's mutant screeching. It's like some sort of distressing mind torture: "Here, listen to Mariah Carey's unbearably high-pitched squeal while you watch two characters from a show you don't care about have sweaty, softcore sex." YouTube ought to be held accountable for these sorts of cultural atrocities.
Verdict: Both contenders this week exemplify the creepiness inherent in all good tributes, though both are also unfortunately pretty tepid. Advantage goes to the Bright Eyes video for its creative use of still images. Now get me away from Luby, stat.

Mariah Carey You Need Me Lyrics
*** Complimentary You Need Me Ringtone ***
Wait a minute
Before you walk away
Let me finish
I've got a lot to say
Baby, I'm not gonna tolerate
This game that you play
You'll regret it
If you desert me this way
When there's nobody
To dry your eyes
Suddenly you're gonna realize
Chorus:(Don't you know)
You need me
(Don't you see)
Believe me
Before you act so hastily
Baby remember you need me
Honey listen, don't make a big mistake
I'm in your system
You really can't escape
When there's nobody
To hold your hand
Suddenly you're gonna understand
Chorus
No one understands you like I do
After everything
That we've been through
Baby, you can turn around and leave
But I know that you'll keep
Coming right back to me
Chorus

Mariah Carey Vision Of Love Lyrics
*** Complimentary Vision Of Love Ringtone ***
Treated me kind
Sweet destiny
Carried me through desperation
To the one that was
waiting for me
It took so longStill I believed
Somehow the one that I needed
Would find me eventually
I had a vision of love
And it was all that you've given to me
Prayed through the nights
Felt so alone
Suffered through alienation
Carried the weight on my own
Had to be strong
So I believed
And now I know I've succeeded
In finding the place I conceived
I had a vision of love
And it was all that you've given to me
I had a vision of love
And it was all that you've given me
I've realized a dream
And I visualized
The love that came to be
Feel so alive
I'm so thankful that I've received
The answer that heaven has sent down to me
You treated me kind
Sweet destiny
And I'll be eternally grateful
Holding you so close to me
Prayed through the nights
So faithfully
Knowing the one that I needed
Would find me eventually
I had a vision of love
And it was all that you've given to me
I had a vision of love
And it was all that you turned out to be
Vanishing Lyrics

Mariah Carey Vanishing Lyrics
*** Complimentary Vanishing Ringtone ***
If I could recapture
All of the memories
And bring them to life
Surely I would
Hear the distant laughter
Wasn't it you and me
Surviving the night
You're fading out of my sight
Swiftly
Chorus:
You're vanishing
Drifting away
You're vanishing
I was so enraptured
No sensibility
To open my eyes
I misunderstood
Now you're fading faster
It's suddenly hard to see
You're taking the light
Letting the shadows inside
Swiftly
Chorus
Reaching out into the distance
Searching for spirits of the past
Just a trace of your existence to grasp
And if somehow I could recapture
All of the memories
And bring them to life
Lord knows I would
But now you're fading faster
Getting so hard to see
Taking the light
Letting the darkness inside
Swiftly
Chorus
Someday Lyrics

Mariah Carey Someday Lyrics
*** Complimentary Someday Ringtone ***
You were so blind to let me go
You had it all but didn't know
No one you'll ever find will be
Closer to all your dreams than me
Believing the grass would be greener
You told yourself "I just don't need her now"
But I know you'll soon discover
You're never satisfied with any other
Chorus:
Someday Oo Someday
One you gave away will be the only one you're wishing for
Someday hey hey
Boy you're gonna pay 'cause baby I'm the one who's keeping score
You'll change your mind and call my name
Soon as you find they're all the same
And when you find yourself alone
Don't come back crying
You should have known
Believe me I'm not pretending
It's not hard to predict
This ending now'
Cause I know you'll soon discover
You're needing me in spite of all the others
Chorus
Maybe now you just can't conceive
That there'll ever come a time when you're cold and lonely
Baby, how could you ever believe
That another could replace me
The one and only
But when your down
In your time of need
And you're thinking that you
Might be coming back to own me
Just think again 'cause
I won't need your love anymore!
Chorus

Mariah Carey Sent From Up Above Lyrics
*** Complimentary Sent From Up Above Ringtone ***
I can't imagine
Looking in someone else's eyes
What we have surpasses
Even paradise
It's hard to fathom
Reaching for someone else's hand
What we share is magic
Heaven had a plan
Chorus:Sent from up above
So much love
In my life
I can't get enough
Of your touch-feels so right
Unending passion
Somehow the fire never dies
What we share
Is everlasting
Love without without demise
He made it happen
Placed so much joy into our hands
What we dreamed
We finally captured
Heaven took command
Chorus
Prisoner Lyrics

Mariah Carey Prisoner Lyrics
*** Complimentary Prisoner Ringtone ***
Here comes the night
No more living in the shadow of your love
This is my life
You always tried so hard to keep me down
But now I'll rise above
Those empty lies
Stop pretending that my accusations
Take you by surprise
I've realized
Now I'm ending all the secrecy
I see through your disguise
All the dreams we planned
I believed so I held on
I understand
So when the morning comes
You know that I'll be gone
You don't think that I'll be strong enough
I won't be a prisoner of your love
No longer blind
I can focus on deception
Used to keep me by your side
I read your mind
Don't believe it's all a mystery
There's nothing you can hide
It's all defined
There's nothing you can tell me now
To change the way I feel inside
All the dreams we planned
I believed so I held on
I understand
So when the morning comes
You know that I'll be gone
You don't think that I'll be strong enough
I won't be prisoner of your love
I'm just not the girl you thought I was
I won't be a prisoner of your love

Mariah Carey Love Takes Time Lyrics
*** Complimentary Love Takes Time Ringtone ***
I had it all
But I let it slip away
Couldn't see that I treated you wrong
Now I wander around
Feeling down and cold
Trying to believe that you're gone
Chorus :
Love takes time
To heal when you're hurting so much
Couldn't see that I was blind
To let you go
I can't escape the pain
Inside
Love takes time
I don't wanna be here alone
Losing my mind
From this hollow in my heart
Suddenly I'm so incomplete
Lord I'm needing you now
Tell me how to stop the rain
Tears are falling down endlessly
[Chorus]
You might say that it's over
You might say that you don't care
You might say you don't miss me
You don't need me
But I know that you do and I feel that you do
Inside
[Chorus]

Mariah Carey I Don't Wanna Cry Lyrics
*** Complimentary I Don't Wanna Cry Ringtone ***
Once again we sit in silence
After all is said and done
Only emptiness inside us
Baby, look what we've become
We can make a million promises
But we still won't change
It isn't right to stay together
When you only bring each other pain
Chorus:
I don't wanna cry
Don't wanna cry
Nothing in the world
Could take us back
To where we used to be
Though I've give you my heart and soul
I must find a way of letting go'
Cause baby, I don't wanna cry
Too far apart to bridge the distance
But something keeps us hanging on and on
Pretending not to know the difference
Denying what we had is gone
Every moment we're together
It's just breaking me down
I know we swore it was forever
But it hurts too much to stay around
Chorus
All the magic's gone
There's just a shadow of a memory
Something just went wrong
We can't go on make- believing
Chorus

Hooo
Mh
Swept me away
But now I'm lost in the dark
Set me on fire
But now I'm left with a spark
Alone, you got beyond the haze and
I'm lost inside the maze
I guess I'm all alone in love
I look into your eyes
You turn the other way
And now I realize
It's all a game you play
I hold you in the night
And wake to find you gone
You're running out of sight
It's so hard holding on
All alone in love
Swept me away
But now I'm lost in the dark
Set me on fire
But now I'm left with a spark
Alone, you got beyond the haze and
I'm lost inside the maze
I guess I'm all alone in love
You haunt me in my dreams
I'm calling out your name
(calling out your name)
I watch you fade away
(you know your love is not the same)
I've figured out your style
To quickly drift apart
(to quickly drift apart)
You held me for a while
Planned it from the start
All alone in love
Sitting in the dark without you
How am I supposed to make it
Through the night
(how am I supposed to make it)
(through the night)
(how am I supposed to make it)
Slowly fall apart without you
Cry away the hours
Till the morning light
Swept me away
But now I'm lost in the dark
Set me on fire
But now I'm left with a spark
Alone, you got beyond the haze and
I'm lost inside the maze
I guess I'm all alone in love

Come closer
You seem so far away
There's something I know you need to say
I feel your emotions
When I look in your eyes

There's so much you need to realize
You'll feel my emotions if you look in my eyes
Chorus:
Hey darlin' I know you think my love is slipping away
But baby it's all in your mind
Don't worry
Hold on tight and hear me when I say
Baby it's all in your mind
Believe me I believe in you
There's nothing this feeling couldn't do
Move closer my darling
Feel the love in my eyes

The wind has taken you
You're free finally at peace
So still you lie
Leaving your cares behind
The pain is gone
Gone with the spirits in your eyes
Now you're wandering around
Above us
Looking downward
As we cry
You've flown into the wind
Escaping all the hurt within
Took to the sky
Leaving the world behind
So young to die
How could you let it all pass you by
And to the wind go so many dreams
That you had inside
Now you're just a memory
Burning in my mind
So young to die
How could you let life pass you by
And now you'll never know I loved you
And now you'll never know I cared
I really loved you
And now you'll never know
You'll only fade

But now I feel so secure
By your side
I can conquer the world
I gave you my love
And I know you're the one

Mariah Carey Now That I Know Lyrics
*** Complimentary Now That I Know Ringtone ***
Chorus
Now that I know
That you want me for me
I can be what you want
I can be what you need
Now that I know
That your love is for real
I can finally see
This is not make believe anymore
I never knew
If I could believe in you
I thought I was just a diversion
And you were killing some time
My friends they told me
To leave you
They said you would never
Be mine
But you gave me your love
And you said I'm the one
You want for the rest of
Your life
Chorus
I was afraid
It was all a masquerade
That I was only a plaything
And you would leave me behind
But now I feel so secure
By your side
I can conquer the world
I gave you my love
And I know you're the one
I want for the rest
Of my life

Mariah Carey Never Forget You Lyrics
*** Complimentary Never Forget You Ringtone ***
I won't see your smile
And I won't hear you
Laugh anymore
Every night
I won't see you
Walk through that door
'Cause the time wasn't on
Your side
It isn't right
I can't say I love you
It's too late to
Tell you
But I really need
You to know
Chorus
No, I'll never forget you
I'll never let you out of my heart
You will always be here with me
I'll hold on to the memories baby
Baby can you hear me
Wherever you
May be tonight
Are you near me
I need you to be by
My side
'Cause I never said
Goodbye
It isn't right
I should have said
I love you
Why didn't I just
Tell you
God knows I need
You to know
Chorus
Somewhere I know you'll be
With me
Someday in another time
But right now you're gone
You just vanished away
But I'll never leave
You behind
Chorus(Repeat and fade)

Mariah Carey Music Box Lyrics
*** Complimentary Music Box Ringtone ***
When I am lost
You shine a light for me and set me free
When I am low
You wash away my tears
And take me through
The loneliness
And emptiness
Through the darkest nights
Somehow I survive
Through it all
Chorus
When you tell me I'm the only one you need
Sweet and tenderly
And your love
Breaks away the clouds surrounding me
All I have I want I give to thee
If I should fall
Your love is strong enough to lift me up
If I'm afraid
You chase away my fears
And take me to
A brighter place
Beyond the rain
And I feel alright
Because you're by my side
Through it all
Chorus
You take me through
The loneliness and emptiness
And I feel alright
'Cause you're by my side
Through it all you tell me I'm the only one you need
So sweet and tenderly
And your love
Just breaks away the clouds surrounding me
Baby all I have I want to give to thee
Want to give you all of my love
Now and forever my love
All I have I want to give to thee

Mariah Carey Just To Hold You Once Again Lyrics
*** Complimentary Just To Hold You Once Again Ringtone ***
Do you know
How it feels
Lying here without you baby
You could never understand what's happening to me
So alone
Nothing's real
I just dream about you baby
And forever wonder why you had
To break free
Chorus
Even though you're not my lover
Even though you're not my friend
I would give my all
To have you here
Just to hold you once again
It's so hard
To believe
I don't have you right beside me
As I long to touch you
But you're out of my reach
And my heart doesn't feel
It's so very cold inside of me
Just a shadow of someone that I used to be
Chorus
You were the only one (only one)
That I allowed inside my heart
Now I'm just holding on
To something so far gone
Where did I go wrong
Chorus

Mariah Carey Without You Lyrics
*** Complimentary Without You Ringtone ***
No I can't forget this evening
Or your face as you were leaving
But I guess that's just the way the story goes
You always smile but in your eyes
Your sorrow shows Yes it shows
No I can't forget tomorrow
When I think of all my sorrow
When I had you there But then I let you go
And now it's only fair That I should let you know
What you should know
I can't live If living is without you
I can't live I can't give anymore
I can't live If living is without you
I can't give I can't give anymore
Well I can't forget this evening
Or your face as you were leaving
But I guess that's just the way the story goes
You always smile but in your eyes Your sorrow shows
Yes it shows
I can't live If living is without you
I can't live I can't give any more

Mariah Carey I've Been Thinking About You Lyrics
*** Complimentary I've Been Thinking About You Ringtone ***
We've known each other
For a long long time But I never really noticed
All the magic in your eyes
I've been around you
A thousand times before
And you've always been a friend to me
But now I'm wanting more
I must have been so blind
I never realized
You're the one that's right for me
All the while I couldn't see
And now I feel so strange
I'll never be the same
Going 'round and 'round in circles
And I don't know what to do
'Cause baby
Chorus
I've been thinking about you
In the most peculiar ways
I've been thinking about you
It's unbelievable to me
But suddenly I think
I'm falling in love with you
There's no explaining how I feel inside
I'm going thru a transformation
That's so hard for me to hide
I had a revelation that
Finally opened up my eyes
The one I spent a lifetime searching for
Was right here all the time
I was oblivious so very out of touch
All the while I couldn't see
You're the one that's right for me
And now my world has changed
I'll never be the same
Going 'round and 'round in circles
And it's all because of you
Sweet baby
Chorus
Chorus
Don't you know
That you're blowing my mind
What you do to me
I can't describe
Baby I can't hold back anymore
I just can't conceal it
You're the one I really adore
I've been thinking about you
In the most peculiar ways
I've been thinking about you

Mariah Carey Hero Lyrics
*** Complimentary Hero Ringtone ***
There's a hero
If you look inside your heart
You don't have to be afraid
Of what you are
There's an answer
If you reach into your soul
And the sorrow that you know
will melt away
And then a hero comes along
With the strength to carry on
And you cast your fears aside
And you know you can survive
So when you feel like hope is gone
Look inside you and be strong
And you'll finally see the truth
That a hero lies in you
It's a long road
When you face the world alone
No one reaches out a hand
For you to hold
You can find love
If you search within yourself
And the emptiness you felt will disappear
[
And then a hero comes along
With the strength to carry on
And you cast your fears aside
And you know you can survive
So when you feel like hope is gone
Look inside you and be strong
And you'll finally see the truth
That a hero lies in you
Lord knows
Dreams are hard to follow
But don't let anyone Tear them away
Hold on
There will be tomorrow
and In time You'll find the way
And then a hero comes along
With the strength to carry on
And you cast your fears aside

Mariah Carey Dreamlover Lyrics
*** Complimentary Dreamlover Ringtone ***
I need a lover to give me
The kind of love
That would last always
I need somebody uplifting
To take me away
I want a lover who knows me
Who understands how I feel inside
Someone to comfort and hold me
Through the long lonely nights
Till the dawn
Why don't you take me away
Chorus
Dreamlover come rescue me
Take me up take me down
Take me anywhere you want to baby now
I need you so desperately
Won't you please come around
'Cause I wanna share forever with you baby
I don't want another pretender
To disillusion me one more time
Whispering words of forever
Playing with my mind
I need someone to hold on to
The kind of love that won't fly away
I just want someone to belong to
Everyday
Of my life
Always
So come and take me away

If you're lonely

And troubles seem like

So don't you fear
Even if you're miles away
I'm by your side
So don't you ever be lonely
Love will make it alright
When the shadows are closing in
And your spirit diminishing
Just remember you're not alone
